Introduction to the UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development
The Sustainable Development Goals were adopted by the United Nations to ensure a peaceful and progressive world by the year 2030. These goals are thought off in a certain way which can affect and promote positive outcomes complementing and advancing each other. Many countries have adopted and are working towards achieving or merely working towards them by undertaking these goals as challenges in order to have a desired or a satisfying outcome. In the end its just about creating a balanced and harmonious environment for all (Sustainable Development Goals | United Nations Development Programme, n.d.)
Beautiful Trouble
In my opinion, the term ‘Beautiful Trouble’ would mean an issue or problem which is genuine and can be resolved by undertaking certain measures and as a result would give a positive (beautiful) outcome.
In the contexts of SGD’s, this would be kind of a similar thing. Here, Beautiful Trouble is a book and set of ideologies – a Toolbox; created by a bunch of activists and changemakers. It consists of some principles, ways of working towards goals, ideas and addressing challenges. These efforts made by the people would help and are helping in shaping the system and designing a plan to tackle the issues faced : (Toolbox — Beautiful Trouble, n.d.).
Cultural Jamming
Cultural Jamming is the practice or a way of protesting done by activists and social workers in order to express what’s right and wrong. It involves tackling social issues in a satirical way. This approach gives us an idea of the power of media and advertising in order to create awareness, promote change and take action towards certain goals and social issues (Cole, 2021).
It can also mean to create something culturally focused.
Personal Reflection
After going through various theories from the Beautiful Trouble Toolbox, ‘Theatre of the Oppressed’ by Augusto Boal interested me the most. It is a set of theatrical techniques which helps one to project themselves in certain ways to take action. He was a social activist himself and by this theory he found a way to express himself, his views and opinions giving rise to this technique; which now is a form used by various people in order to present their ideologies and take action to make the world a better place (Gewertz, 2003).
The particular SDG I am willing to work on, which is SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, I think using one of the Legislative Theatre technique from this would be useful in putting up a situation and forming a point. This type of technique basically gives a right to the public to mediate in the on-going act and take over in the direction they want. Its democratic. It can promote a new rules, laws and promote policy changing proposals to the government. In this, communities and various activists work in order to point out a social issue and suggest ways they can tackle and work on resolving it (Bower & Bower, 2022).
I believe it is important to work on this issue in such a way that everyone understands its importance and genuinely works towards it. As someone who is set to enter into the corporate world or is looking for employment opportunities to survive in this world, having a proper source of income becomes really necessary. Not only me but many such people like me with much more responsibilities needs a stable source of income in order to sustain in this fast paced world. With that said, I not only mean better job opportunities to all but also good and healthy working environments can play a vital role in shaping the economic growth of a nation. Many say that money does not matter but someway or the other is does. For most of the people half of their problems will be solved or will be taken care of with the way the earn and work in this world.
